How IVF Treatment Works (The Complete Procedure)
IVF treatment involves the procedure of removing the eggs from the woman's ovaries and fertilizing the same in the laboratory with sperm. The fertilized eggs or embryos are kept in the laboratory for a period of 3 to 7 days to help them germinate, after which one or two of the embryos are placed back in the carrier’s uterus for the remaining growth and pregnancy.
The process involves various steps if we look into it in detail. It starts with the prescription of birth control pills or estrogens at first to help any growth in ovarian cysts. The next step is to keep close monitoring of the ovarian cycle via ultrasounds. This allows the identification of the trigger shot or the period when the eggs can be retrieved.
Once the set time frame is reached, the eggs are then retrieved from the patient’s body via needle insertion and suction. The eggs removed from the ovaries are then placed in an incubator or a controlled environment. These are then fertilized with the use of sperm injection and placed in the lab for 3 to 7 days for growth. In this cycle, over 70% of the eggs normally mature successfully.
All the mature embryos are then transferred to the ovaries of the carrier via fresh or frozen embryo transfer as suitable. Once it is all done, the patient is monitored regularly throughout the pregnancy to help make it successful.
The cost of IVF treatment depends on various factors like:
Apart from the aforementioned ones, there are other IVF treatments like Donor Egg IVF, Donor Sperm IVF, and Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) that patients can choose from depending on the type and the need for IVF.
Note:
IVF treatment allows for assisted reproduction and helps couples having issues in conceiving a child finally have a successful pregnancy and enjoy parenthood.
