URSL full form in medical term is Ureteroscopy and Laser Stone Fragmentation. It’s a procedure to remove the kidney and ureteral stones without traditional surgery. URSL is usually performed in case of stones present in the kidney, and ureter with more than 1cm in size. This procedure is also helpful to confirm and rule out other abnormalities as well. Before the stone removal, the renal collective system is properly diagnosed for any abnormality.
This procedure is done under general anesthesia, so the patient is completely unconscious during the whole procedure. A small and flexible tube is passed through the urethra into the bladder, and then the flexible probe is inserted into the ureter into the kidney. First, the doctors inject a special dye which helps in the x-ray and determines the exact location of the stones inside the kidney or ureter passage. Once the location of the stone is confirmed, the probe uses laser stone fragmentation to break the large stones into small pieces, and extract them one by one. The final check is done after the stone pieces are extracted to make sure no stone residue is left.
