ROM full form in medical term is Range Of Motion. Range of Motion or ROM is a measurement technique to measure the body part movements (mostly joints) after surgery or treatment. Achieving a better range of motion for the patients is the main goal of physical therapies. During such therapies, medical professionals can suggest muscle-strengthening exercises to get to the normal level of ROM. And it can be a painful procedure at first but soon you’ll see your joints’ range of motion increase, and you’ll be able to move that body part on your own.
For proper ROM measurement, a mechanical device goniometer is used. There are three ways to measure ROM, the first one is the Passive Range of Motion where you are completely dependent on a therapist or doctor to move your injured body part to measure the range of motion. Active-Assistive Range of Motion is the second type where you are able to use your muscles around the injured part for movement, but you still need assistance. Active Range of Motion is the third type where you are able to move the joints or body parts freely without any assistance, and after you have healed properly, there’s no risk of further injury because of movement.
