MCU full form in medical term is Micturating Cystourethrogram. The risk of urinary infection can be much higher at an early age, and it can cause a lot of discomfort and health issues to the patient. Sometimes when the bladder is full of urine, it can go back up the ureter passage, and this can be the reason for the infection. In the MCU procedure, doctors insert a catheter into the bladder and fill it up with a fluid containing Iodine. Once the bladder is full, the patient is asked to urinate, and during the urination, doctors can take x-ray images, which is the main goal of the whole procedure.
Usually, this procedure is performed on children around the age of 6 months to 2 years. However, doctors can use this procedure to diagnose older children as well as adults in some cases. Since MCU requires the catheter to be inserted into the bladder, which can be a little uncomfortable for the children. If your child is old enough to understand what is going on, then you can discuss the procedure with your little one to calm him/her down.
