The full form of IDM in Medical is Infants of diabetic mothers. This term is used for the fetus who has been exposed to high blood sugar because of the diabetic mother. If the mother has diabetes, the infant will be exposed to high sugar during pregnancy. There are two such causes of diabetes during pregnancy. This includes gestational diabetes and pre-existing diabetes.
Infants of diabetic mothers are impacted by this before, during and after birth. As per the clinical studies, Infants of diabetic mothers are larger than other babies, and hence there is a risk involved in vaginal birth. Infants of diabetic mothers may also have high red blood cell count, breathing difficulties, high bilirubin levels and thickened heart muscles between ventricles.
