HAPU Full Form in Medical term is Hospital Acquired Pressure Injury, formerly called pressure ulcer. It is a localized injury underlying tissue or to the skin, which is caused due to having extended pressure on the skin.
Pressure ulcers most often form on the skin that covers bony parts of the body, including the ankles, heels, tailbone, and hips. It can develop over days or hours. Most of them are treatable, but some are completely untreatable. The most common signs and symptoms of bedsores are swelling, pus-like discharge and abnormal changes in skin texture or colour. Depending on the severity, depth, and other characteristics, bedsores fall into several stages. The degree of tissue and skin damage ranges from changes in skin colour to deep bruising, including bone and muscle.
One who uses a wheelchair will have bedsores on the skin of different body parts, such as shoulder blades, buttocks, tailbone, spine, legs, back of arms, etc.
Other people may have bedsores on the shoulder blades, the sides of the head, the lower back or tailbone, the ankles and skin behind the knees.
