FFD full form in medical term is Fox Fordyce Disease, a rare and common skin disorder typically affecting females. It is detected by intense itching, especially in the public area, the underarm area, and around the nipples. Also called apocrine miliaria, FFD abnormalities affect the sweat glands, causing the glands to become inflamed, swollen and intensely itchy.
The skin affected by the condition or the surrounding area may be dry and dark and may even have small, various, raised papules. However, the exact incidence of FFD cannot be ascertained and is unknown.
The signs and symptoms of FFD usually appear suddenly after normally affected areas of the body experience moisture, heat, friction, and exercise that further lead to itchy bumps.
The treatment of FFD is based on certain visible symptoms in each person. It is advisable to consult with a dermatologist. However, some treatments and medications that have been used include oral retinoids, estrogen hormones, topical antibiotics, and steroid creams. No single therapy is generally effective in all patients.
Estrogen-based oral medications have been most effective in treating females with FFD. In minimal cases, medicines like topical antibiotics and corticosteroid creams are recommended.
