EVA full form in medical is Enlarged Vestibular Aqueducts. Kids having enlarged vestibular aqueducts are more likely to experience hearing loss, according to studies. Researchers have also discovered that between 5 and 15 percent of kids with sensorineural hearing impairment (hearing loss due to damage to sensory cells in the cochlea) also has EVA.
But researchers believe that the underlying abnormality that causes EVA also causes hearing loss. EVA can be a useful indicator of the true cause of hearing loss.
Pendred syndrome, a hereditary condition that often results in deafness in children, can be an indication of EVA. About a quarter of those who have EVA and loss of hearing have Pendred syndrome, according to research done by National Institute for Deafness or Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD).
A child with Pendred syndrome will often experience gradual hearing loss over time. Some youngsters may develop complete hearing loss.
There are many potential triggers for EVA, not all of them have been identified. Mutations in a specific gene SLC26A4 are the most common cause of EVA associated hearing loss. Pendred syndrome is due to two different mutations inside the SLC26A4 gene. Researchers suspect that additional, as-yet-unidentified, genetic or environmental variables also contribute to EVA.
Other meaning of EVA is Electric Vacuum Aspiration
