The full form of DIC is Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation. Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation is a medical condition where blood clots form in the body and the blood vessels. The symptoms of Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation may include chest pain, leg pain, shortness of breath, and problems moving body parts or speaking. You may even notice blood in stool and urine. More severe complications of Disseminated Intravascular Coagulationinclude organ failure.
The causes of DIC can be sepsis, cancer, surgery, major trauma, or complications in pregnancy. In some cases, Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation may also occur because of frostbite, snake bite, and burns. Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation can be categorized into two types. These are chronic DIC and rapid DIC. There are blood tests to detect Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation, and the usual ones include checking INR, platelets, fibrinogen, and D-dimer. The patient is given frozen plasma, platelets, or cryoprecipitate for the treatment. The DIC can also result in death.
