CST Full Form in Medical is contraction stress test. The ability of the fetus to endure artificially induced labor is evaluated using contraction stress test (CST).
During contractions stress test, the fetus’s cardiac rate is measured electronically. The ability of the placenta to supply adequate oxygen to the fetus can be assessed by monitoring the cardiac heart rate during contractions.
If CST reveals that the placenta is not delivering adequate oxygen to the fetus, the doctor will have a better idea of how to proceed with the birth in the most secure manner possible.
This test is also known as oxytocin challenge test.
While CST poses no significant health risks, it may cause some women to go into labor before they are ready. Women with placenta previa, a history of uterine rupture, and perhaps a previous caesarean section should not undergo the test. Before the test, your physician will assist you consider the pros and cons.
Any decrease in your baby’s pulse rate during contractions may indicate trouble. You may be advised to undergo additional testing by your doctor. Having the baby early can be the best choice in some cases.
