BMV in Medical term stands for Balloon Mitral Valvotomy. This is a procedure used for opening the stenotic valve in the heart. There are certain conditions wherein the Balloon Mitral Valvotomy may be performed. If the patient has minimal valve stenosis with symptoms, then the doctor may recommend a BMV. In addition, if the patient is old and at high risk, the doctors may recommend Balloon Mitral Valvotomy. Apart from this, the doctors would recommend Balloon Mitral Valvotomy if the patient is suffering from pulmonic valve stenosis or if regular valvotomy can’t be performed for any reason.
Balloon Mitral Valvotomy is a minimally invasive procedure. Here, the doctors would access the valve through the lumen of the vessel. A catheter is used for getting access. Here, the incision is very small. The balloon is inserted through the robotic arms, and it is then inflated to widen the valve. Immediately, the width of the valve increases, improving blood circulation. It helps in reducing the chance of heart attack. If the patient has already suffered from a heart attack, then Balloon Mitral Valvotomy will help pervert a secondary attack or a heart failure.
