The full form of IRT in Medical is Immunoreactive Trypsinogen. IRT is a blood test that doctors usually request for newborn babies. The test helps screen cystic fibrosis. Sometimes, the doctors may recommend IRT and a sweat chloride test. Sometimes, IRT is also used to detect acute pancreatitis. In most countries, CF screening is mandatory, so the test is ordered soon after birth.
If the IRT levels are higher than the range, then the baby may have CF. This may even refer to the abnormal pancreatic enzyme. The problem with IRT is that the rate of false positives is significantly high. In such a case, the doctors will perform the additional test or repeat IRT after a month.
