The full form of FWT in Medical is Fast Walking Test. This is also known as Fast 10-m Walk Test or Functional Walking Test. This test is mainly used in paediatrics to evaluate the ability to walk. The test also helps the doctor evaluate any musculoskeletal or neurological condition. The test has three components: Walking 10 meters, Walking on Tiptoes and Heels, Ascending and Descending Steps. Timings are noted for each test, and functional mobility is assessed based on the results.
The test is used to diagnose conditions like spinal bifida, cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy. The test is conducted from time to time to evaluate the children’s development. The equipment required for the test includes a stopwatch, tape measure, 6 inches step and assisted device. If your paediatrician asks the child to walk or run for a short distance during the general check-up, then that means that the doctor is conducting Functional Walking Test to assess the child.
