LAP Full Form in Medical is Leukocyte alkaline phosphatase. The type of alkaline phosphatase that is present in leukocytes is referred to as leukocyte alkaline phosphatase, or LAP for short. White blood cells are also sometimes referred to as leukocytes.
These white blood cells come in a few different varieties. Each one contributes to the overall process of protecting your body from various pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria, as well as other germs in a unique way.
When you suffer from chronic myeloid leukemia, also known as CML, the white blood cells contain a lower level of alkaline phosphatase than they normally would. As a consequence of this, in the past, in order to detect CML, medical professionals would conduct an LAP test.
Instead, they typically place an order for a cytogenetic test these days. Laboratory workers examine the chromosomes in the white blood cells as part of a cytogenetic test. This test is used to screen for abnormalities that can lead to CML.
In certain circumstances, your physician may still recommend an LAP test in order to look for indications of CML and other illnesses.
