TPA full form in medical is Tissue Plasminogen Activator. You may know about the hemostasis process which is actually a response of the human body to prevent blood loss when there is an open wound. And during this blood loss prevention, a stage occurs that we refer to as fibrinolysis in medical science. And in this process, a type of protein that we know as tPA or Tissue Plasminogen Activator plays a huge role.
When the blood clot is already in place, then under the dried-up blood clot surface, the healing of the wound happens. And once the healing is somewhat complete, it becomes essential for the body to deal with or break the blood clot, otherwise it’ll continue to build up as layers. And this is where the role of tPA or Tissue Plasminogen Activator comes in. The tPA works as a catalyst or activator to convert the plasminogen into plasmin. Once the plasminogen is turned into plasmin, the actual clot breakdown starts from there. And that happens because of the digestion of fibrin and fibrinogen.
