PRL stands for Prolactin. Prolactin is the hormone which is produced by the pituitary gland. It is often known as the growth gland. This gland is located at the base of the brain, and it is one of the most important glands in the body. Prolactin is one of the hormones secreted by the pituitary gland. Talking about the function of PRL, it is responsible for the growth of the breast and the secretion of milk during pregnancy. PRL levels are always higher in new mothers and pregnant ladies.
In some cases, PRL levels may increase in men or non-pregnant ladies. This is not normal, and it may point towards a tumour of the pituitary gland. This condition is known as prolactinoma; under this condition, the gland produces a lot of PRL. This condition may lead to milk secretion in men and non-pregnant ladies. High PRL is also linked to low sex drive, infertility, menstrual problems and erectile dysfunction. Doctors may order this test if you are facing any of these symptoms. PRL is tested through blood, which needs to be taken 3 to 4 hours after waking up. Depending on the PRL levels, the doctor may order an MRI or a CT Scan.
