TFT full form in medical term is Thyroid Function Tests. The thyroid function test is the best way to check whether the thyroid gland is producing the correct amount of hormones or not. With such tests, doctors can easily diagnose common thyroid disorders or diseases. When a patient comes to the hospital and if he/she shows signs of possible thyroid disorder or disease, then TFTs are the first line of diagnosis that doctors perform.
During the TFTs, the level of TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) is checked, if the TSH levels are lower or higher in the blood then there can be possible thyroid dysfunctions. TSH is a hormone secreted by a gland in the brain, which has the instructions for the thyroid gland to function. When checking for TSH levels, terms like hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism are used by medical professionals. Whereas hyperthyroidism indicates a lower level of TSH in the blood test, and on the other hand hypothyroidism means an increased level of TSH. In both conditions, if the patient hasn’t been diagnosed with thyroid cancer then the doctors use medications to maintain the correct TSH levels in the blood.
