INC full form in medical term is Intensive Neonatal Care. This is a special unit where all premature or ill newborn infants are monitored. The term neonatal means the initial four weeks of life. So, if the baby needs medical attention during this time and is critical, he may be kept in Intensive Neonatal Care. In an INC, you will find physicians, nurses, general practitioners, assistants, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, dieticians and respiratory specialists.
In India, there are three levels of INC. it depends on the age and the weight of the neonatal. The most basic is Level I Intensive Neonatal Care. Here the baby is kept if the weight is over 1.8 Kg. and if the baby has a gestation maturity of more than 34 weeks. This type of care can be given at home as well. The next is Level II Intensive Neonatal Care. The baby is kept here if the weight is between 1.2 and 1.8 Kg. Or else, if the baby is between 30 weeks & 34 weeks, the baby will be kept here. The most critical is Level III, and the baby is kept here if the age is less than 30 weeks or the weight is less than 1.2 Kg.
