PICU full form in medical term is Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. PICU is a part of the hospital just like other wards, and it is very similar to the ICU ward, but it is for children and infants only. With Pediatric Intensive Care Units, it is possible to treat and observe infants and children up to the age of 18. The word “Pediatrics” has another common meaning, which is “Healer of Children.”
Just like in the ICU, all the medical and surgical equipment is present in the PICU ward. Most of the time, such wards are located in a huge hall with other PICUs, so that children don’t feel uneasy. As per the illness or disease of a child, there are many specialized doctors and nurses assigned to the PICU ward. This part of the hospital can be used to treat children with mental instability or any mental illness as well. Other than that, PICUs are used to treat children with life-threatening diseases. In most cases, when the condition of a patient is stable, doctors move them to the observatory ward or general ward before discharging them.
